Andrew Pike

Managing director

Andrew has 26 years' health management experience at board and CEO level. He has held several senior NHS posts in the East of England and Essex, including overseeing the success regime for mid and south Essex.

He has a long and varied career in hospitals, primary care and commissioning. Prior to joining Basildon and Thurrock hospitals, he spent five years as NHSE’s director of commissioning operations for the East of England. His move to Basildon and Thurrock Hospitals allows him, once again, to get closer to the front line of patient care, which has always been his passion.

Katrina Leighton

Director of finance 

Katrina has 28 years+ financial experience within the public sector, both in local government and more recently within the NHS in a variety of roles, her most recent notable role being interim CFO for a CCG. She has a broad experience in financial stewardship and management with a focus on both control and efficiencies. She has extensive experience of change management programmes to improve services and drive cost efficiency.

Fiona Ryan

Director of operations – planned care

Fiona is a radiographer with over 20 years of NHS experience. She joined Basildon and Thurrock hospitals in 2007 to develop the Cath Lab Imaging team in preparation for the opening of the cardiothoracic centre. More recently, Fiona has worked in divisional general manager and divisional clinical director roles, working to improve patient pathways and ensure that the service provision is focused on patient care.

Dawn Patience

Director of nursing

Dawn qualified as a registered nurse in 1987 at Orsett Hospital. In the field of medical nursing, Dawn has worked in gastroenterology, respiratory and end of life care, in various nursing roles including senior sister, Macmillan nurse, matron and head of nursing.

In 2015, Dawn moved to the corporate nursing team gaining further experience and knowledge in governance, risk and compliance, corporate management and partnership working. She was appointed to the role of director of nursing for Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital in March 2016

Dr Tayyab Haider

Medical director

Dr Tayyab Haider first joined Basildon and Thurrock Hospitals as a trainee medical registrar in 1999 and, following specialist training at various Trusts, in 2002 he returned in a consultant role. Having held a number of clinical director positions and the post of deputy medical director, Tayyab was appointed Trust Medical Director on 1 March 2017.

Tayyab is an examiner for MBBS and the Royal College of Physicians, and is an accredited appraiser and educational supervisor. In addition to the Medical Director role, Tayyab is currently the Responsible Officer for the Trust.

Liz Edelman

Head of human resources

Liz first joined Basildon and Thurrock hospitals in 2015 as a project manager and has since been appointed the site head of human resources (HR), responsible for the provision of HR services across the Trust. She has worked as a senior HR professional for over 30 years, undertaking specialist and generalist roles in the NHS, working in hospital, community and commissioning organisations. Liz’s wide range of specialist HR knowledge includes; education, training and workforce development, health and well-being, strategic change management and planning. Liz is also a trained workplace mediator and an executive coach.

Samantha Goldberg

Director of operations - urgent and emergency care

Samantha started her career in the NHS 20 years ago and has held several operational and managerial roles before commencing her position at Basildon. While working at Croydon University Hospital, Sam initiated and oversaw a £23 million project for a new emergency department with high-quality facilities, such as an urgent treatment centre designed by doctors and nurses.

Florence Looi

Estates and facilities site manager

Florence is a highly experienced estates and facilities manager. She began her career in hotel and catering management and has worked for several of the large hotel chains across Europe. Florence joined the NHS in 1980 working for the National Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.  She went on to hold senior management roles at hospitals including The Brook Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Corporate secretary

Andrew Stride

Andrew joined the Trust in October 2015 after 11 years in senior corporate affairs and governance roles within the NHS commissioning sector in South Essex. He is responsible for the smooth running and development of the Trust’s corporate governance and for ensuring that the Trust benefits from an effective Council of Governors and membership base that reflects the population we serve.

Andrew is a Chartered Manager, holding a range of professional qualifications in corporate governance, health service management and corporate services. Andrew mentors aspiring leaders as part of the CMI Achieve Programme and as part of the mentoring network across the three acute trusts in Mid and South Essex.

Andrew is currently fulfilling a Group Director role, leading on the integration of corporate governance across the three trusts as well as providing leadership to the overall merger programme.
