Carers FIRST Carers Hospital Liaison Service

Carers FIRST:

  • provide practical and emotional support to carers and relatives, in the hospital
  • work in partnership with carers and professionals to help reduce inpatient length of stay
  • facilitate two-way communication to ensure the carer’s voice is heard and they are fully informed, especially regarding decisions that will affect their caring role
  • Provide information, advice and guidance on topics relating to your caring role
  • provide ‘carer awareness’ training for professionals

It is important to support carers because:

  • carers know and understand the patient
  • they can give you vital information to inform care
  • delays in transfer of care or discharge can result when carers do not feel prepared or supported
  • involving and supporting carers can reduce re-admission”
