The department delivers a needs related service for the older patient and offers a comprehensive range of acute, rehabilitation and outpatient services.

Pasteur ward accommodates 27 acute stroke beds, 6 have the facility for cardiac physiology monitoring.
The Stroke Thrombolysis service operates 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Lister ward is a 24 bedded stroke rehabilitation unit. The Stroke lead is Dr Farhad Huwez.
The Falls and Bone Health service comprises of outpatient Osteoporosis and Tilt clinics; these are based on the Basildon site. Outreach falls clinics are held at Thurrock Community Hospital.
Osler, Majory Warren and Lionel Cosin wards provide the management and care for general medical older patients each with 1-2 consultant leads. There is a comprehensive service for Orthogeriatrics with a Geriatrician working in liaison with Orthopaedic surgeons. The department has a Complex Case Management team that works in close liaison with other agencies, i.e. Social Services to ensure effective pathways of care are identified for patients with complex discharge needs. This team also leads on Safeguarding Vulnerable Adult issues.
Clinics
General Medical clinics for older people are held by all Consultants and are available on both the Basildon and Orsett sites. TIA clinics are available 7 days a week and are accessed via referral using the cardiac and stroke network referral form. (These clinics are not available on choose and book). Fortnightly falls clinics are held within the primary care setting at Thurrock and Basildon locations. Osteoporosis clinics, with DEXA scanning, are available Monday to Friday at Basildon. General outpatient clinics, held on both Basildon and Orsett sites, Osteoporosis and Tilt clinics are held at Basildon. The service works in collaboration with NHS South West Essex around discharge planning and on going care in the community.
