This ward specialises in caring for acute trauma patients and planned orthopaedic surgery. In addition, the ward provides:

• Surgery for orthopaedic conditions
• Emergency surgery for traumatic injuries
• Care for patients with skeletal and skin traction
• Arthroscopic investigations
• Treatment for spinal injury
• Diagnostic surgical interventions
• Specialist care for major joint replacements
• Treatment for acute and chronic infection
• Treatment for inflammatory diseases and conditions
• Care for patients in plaster and splints
• Physiotherapy and occupational therapy
• Treatment for acute and chronic pain.

The ward has a multi-disciplinary approach to caring for patients, health professionals meet regularly with carers and social services to discuss each patient’s progress and develop a plan for their ongoing care. Staff also work closely with the COMBAT team to organise early discharge for patients with conditions such as major joint replacement and fractured neck of femurs.
