Key InformationHDU is for less sick patients who still require specialist care. We monitor and support patients with, or likely to develop, organ failure. HDU can act as a ‘step down’ or ‘step up’ between levels of care. The aim of the critical care department is to provide safe, high quality patient focused care, whilst maintaining our patient's privacy, dignity and respect. We recognise that this is a stressful environment and distressing time for patients and their relatives, and we endeavour to provide them with compassionate help and support. We aim to ensure that patients and their relatives are given sufficient information to enable them to understand the care and treatment given. While our aim is to promote health and preserve life, we recognise that sadly there are occasions when death is unavoidable; at these times we believe that the death should be pain free and dignified.
