Orsett Ward specialises in the care of patients with cancer, and provides palliative care to patients who are terminally ill (on some occasions Orsett Ward also provides medical care to patients who are not cancer patients).
Providing truly holistic care, the focus of ward staff is on the physical and emotional needs of patients, and their families. This includes the control of side-effects during cancer treatments, the management of symptoms from other conditions, pain management and counselling services. The ward aims to provide as relaxing, restful and homely an environment as possible. Facilities include:
• A day room where patients can spend time away from their bed area and watch TV or relax with visitors
• Jacuzzi bath, for comfort and to help with pain management
• Seven side-rooms, each with a fridge and tea / coffee making facilities
Staff on Orsett Ward work closely with the hospital counsellor for people affected by cancer, the palliative care team and with community services to plan appropriate support, in the patient's preferred place of care. The ward has a dedicated Consultant in Palliative Care. Other specialist consultants and their medical teams, visit their patients on the ward each day or as needed.
