The Haematology Department provides a diagnostic and analytical service comprising:
Haematology Laboratory
Provides a full range of Haematology and Coagulation blood tests for in-patients and Out-patients. Haemoglobinopathy screening for in-patients and Out-patients (predominantly Antenatal patients) and Anticoagulant monitoring of Out-patients.Blood Transfusion
It provides blood transfusion compatibility testing and issue of blood products mainly for in-patients but also for patients transfused at Community sites. Also a range of diagnostic tests for in-patients and Out-patients and Antenatal screening.
Clinical Diagnostic Services
Consultant Haematological diagnostic and treatment service is provided for in-patients and Out-patients. Haematology patients are admitted to different Medical wards and there is a dedicated Day transfusion Centre onsite. Services (and the Laboratories) are based at Basildon Hospital but patients attend a range of locations for phlebotomy; phlebotomy is regularly reviewed with a view to improving access. The Department is committed to providing a good quality service and participates in all applicable External Quality assurance schemes. All the Pathology Departments are regularly inspected by Clinical Pathology Accreditation Ltd; the Blood transfusion Laboratory is also inspected by MHRA who regulate compliance with Blood Safety & Quality legislation.
