Anaesthetists are highly trained, skilled doctors who provide a wide range of patient care. Because of the skills they have developed in anaesthesia they play a central part in the management of sick patients both within the operating theatre outside and in other areas. Together with the other members of the Critical Care team, they are involved in:
  • High Dependency and Intensive Care Units
  • Obstetrics
  • A&E
  • Resuscitation
  • Major accident care
  • Pain management
  • Patient transfer between hospitals

The primary function is anaesthetising patients requiring surgery. There are 19 consultants, 10 staff grade practitioners and associate specialists, four specialist registrars and seven senior house officer posts. The consultants also have sub-specialty interests covering specialised anaesthesia for trauma, maternity, paediatrics, and other than anaesthesia, critical care and pain management. The anaesthetic service is delivered across a wide range of settings including main theatres, the day surgery units at Orsett and Basildon, A&E, maternity and the imaging departments as well as the mental health unit.
