The Dermatology Team serves a population of 810,000 across South Essex and a team of 8 Consultant colleagues are based at the purpose-built Arthur Rook Centre for Dermatology at Basildon Hospital

This is a growing service offering a wide range of specialist services. Sub-specialist services currently provided include Paediatric Dermatology, Allergy, Dermatological surgery and Dermatopathology.

The Dermatology Consultant staff are supported by 2 Specialty doctors, 2 Specialist Registrars and 7 part time Doctors. An extensive team of nurses lead by the Senior Sister runs the 2 Dermatology day treatment units.

As the largest unit in Essex, Dermatology occupies a prominent position within the management structure of the trust and has enjoyed significant investment in staffing and facilities over the past 10 years. With further expansion of the catchment area there is scope to further develop the general and subspecialist aspects of the service.

All clinics have facilities for Cryotherapy and minor surgery, but more extensive surgical procedures are undertaken on the weekly minor operations lists (currently 14) at Southend, Basildon and Orsett Hospitals.

Paediatric patients are seen in a weekly Paediatric Dermatology Clinic in the Dermatology Unit at Basildon.

One stop Dermatology Tumour Clinics (where appropriate surgery is carried out on the same day), are run weekly at both Southend and Basildon Hospitals.

An active UV photo therapy programme is delivered from our dedicated Dermatology Day Units sited at Basildon Hospital and Southend Hospital, including PUVA (whole body and hands and feet), both systemic and bath PUVA are available and Narrow Band (TLO 1) UVB. Over 5000 nurse-led treatments were administered in this unit over the past year.

Patch testing is organised and undertaken at Basildon Hospital by the Nurses in conjunction with Dr Skibinska who has an interest in this area leading allergy clinics at Basildon Hospital and increasingly taking referrals for non-Dermatological allergies.

The Histopathology Department occupies expanding facilities at Basildon Hospital and provides a rapid service with results being reported within seven days. Two of the Consultant Dermatologists (Dr S M Khorshid and Dr R Suchak) have special interest in Dermatopathology and spend regular sessions in the Pathology Department.

Nurse led leg ulcer clinics are provided at Basildon and Southend sites.

Dr R. Mehta and Dr S. Lateo have twice weekly dermatological surgery sessions. Two nurse led photo dynamic therapy (PDT) clinics are also available

Dr Karim leads the severe psoriasis clinic and also participates in a combined Dermatology – Gynaecology clinic for vulval disorders

All medical staff are supported by alternate weekly skin cancer MDT meetings and a monthly CPC. General dermatology and Dermatopathology teaching along with a journal club meeting are held on a monthly basis.

A Joint application for training of two Dermatology Specialty Trainees in association with Mid Essex Hospitals was approved by the postgraduate Dean at Eastern Deanery, with both Specialty Trainees now in post. More recently we have completed the process of application and have appointed a second Registrar to cover only Basildon and Southend Hospitals.

Mycology and other microbiological investigations are undertaken by the Department of Microbiology at Southend and Basildon Hospitals.

Plastic Surgery – the Regional centre relocated from St Andrew's Hospital Billericay to Broomfield Hospital Chelmsford in 1998. Consultant Plastic Surgeons were appointed early in 2001 to look after the needs of Basildon and Southend Hospitals, sharing their time between Basildon, Southend and Broomfield. This service has also expanded with the appointment of Mr El-Mottardi who joined the Basildon branch of the service Late 2010.

Radiotherapy – local Oncology clinics are held at Basildon and Orsett but treatment is undertaken in Southend, which is the Regional Cancer Centre. The Basildon Trust is a Cancer Unit.

GU Medicine – excellent departments at both Orsett and Southend Hospitals.

Medical Photography – a first class service is provided from Basildon and Southend Hospitals.

Where patients require inpatient hospital care they will be admitted to medical beds at Southend Hospital and Basildon Hospital, where their day to day care is supervised by the appropriate junior medical team and the Dermatology Nurses.
