Winners of September’s staff awards at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals all have one thing in common – they provide excellent patient care.

Staff from maternity and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) (pictured above) were presented with an award for working extremely hard to provide safe care during their busiest month on record. During August, medical, midwifery, nursing and support staff helped the birth of 430 babies – many more than the usual monthly average of 360. Many of the August babies were premature and needing specialist NICU care.

Jennie Ponting, head of midwifery and quality for women’s services, said: “I am tremendously proud of the entire team, who all worked above and beyond during this busy time to provide safe, high and quality care for mothers and their babies.”

Manuela Balaban, staff nurse on Burstead ward, (pictured left) was nominated for a staff award by a patient for the caring way she treats people.

The patient said: “Manuela takes the time needed with each patient and nothing seems too much trouble. She listens to the patients’ problems and has the utmost care and compassion, along with bringing that little cheeky sense of humour that is needed.”

The theatre orderly team were recognised for their hard work under pressure and the effort they make to keep patients calm and relaxed when they may be worried about having an operation.

The team help to ensure the right equipment is available for each procedure, and to maintain efficient day-to-day running of the busy theatre department.

Lucy Martin, operating department practitioner, nominated the orderlies on behalf of the entire theatre department.

She said: “They always take their time with the patients and this enhances the patient experience. We would like to show our orderly team our appreciation and thank them for all their hard work and support.”

Every month at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals we recognise employees, teams and volunteers who demonstrate our trust values of safe, caring and excellent. If you know a person or team who fits the bill, please find a nomination form at and go to contact us, staff awards.
