Dietitians at Basildon University Hospital have been working to encourage more people to join their profession, by spreading the word about the important role that nutrition plays in patient care.
They hosted a careers open morning at the hospital, with talks and workshops from experts in the field, covering topics such as nutritional support after surgery and paediatric dietetics.
Jasel Burroughs, dietitian, said: “Nutrition and dietetics is an essential element of patients’ health. Dietitians assess, diagnose and treat nutritional problems and work closely with the medical team and therapists to provide the best care for patients. The job is very rewarding and you are able to build great relationships with your patients.”
One of the guests, Tolani Adekunle, aged 17, is studying for A levels in biology, chemistry and psychology at Appleton School in Benfleet.
Tolani, who lives in Laindon, said: “I found the event very helpful; there is so much variety to the subject and now I’m considering going into paediatric dietetics.”
