The final ‘clap for carers’ may have taken place on the 72nd birthday of the NHS, earlier this month, but during the weekly claps one local couple used that moment of thanks to raise £4,400 for Southend Hospital’s Covid-19 Appeal.
Roger and Beryl Hyde from Hadleigh, along with their friends and family, designed, printed and sold ‘Thank you NHS’ boards to people wanting to support thanks to their local hospital. More than 420 were proudly displayed in the windows and front gardens of Essex.
Roger said: “Every pound donated for the boards went towards supporting the Covid-19 appeal at Southend Hospital. It was just our way of thanking the NHS staff for their incredible efforts during this time, and it kept us busy during lockdown too.”
Impressively, over 100 of the boards were sold by Kay Winkworth of Hadleigh Castle U3A in the Daws Heath area alone.
The Covid-19 Appeal is being co-ordinated by the newly formed Mid and South Essex Hospital Charity, bringing together the hospital charities for Southend, Basildon and Mid Essex Hospitals.
Charity Director Lucy Thomas-Clayton said: “The generosity of our local community has been overwhelming and never more important than now, when our staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to care for Cocid-19 patients.”
