In April 2004, we became one of the first ten NHS foundation trusts in the country, with a Council of Governors comprising local elected members, meaning we could work much more closely with our local community to address and deliver their needs.
Local people, patients and staff can become members of the Trust and have a say in the healthcare services we provide. We have more than 12,000 public members and 4,000 staff members.
Foundation Trusts are owned and controlled locally and are accountable to their community. We are free from central Government control and free to manage our own budgets.
We are still part of the NHS, providing NHS services to NHS patients. The difference is that we are run locally, with local people having more influence in the services we provide. Therefore, we are able to respond better to the needs of our patients and staff.
Why become a member?
Membership is free and you can become as involved as you wish.
By becoming a member of our Foundation Trust, you can have a real say in planning our services and through the Governors you nominate and elect to The Council of Governors, your views will be heard.
You will be kept up-to-date on news and developments at both Basildon and Orsett hospitals and sent our newsletter for Foundation Members - The Foundation Times.
You will also be consulted on future plans and services and be notified the next time we hold an election for Governors of the Council of Governors.
As a member you will also be able to attend the quarterly Council of Governors Meetings and the Annual Members’ Meeting.
This is your opportunity to get involved with issues that affect you.
