Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals is the busiest NHS trust in Essex, offering a range of general acute and specialist hospital services at Basildon Hospital, Orsett Hospital and at The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre.

Our team of 4,500 staff work in a variety of clinical and non-clinical roles, providing treatment and care to people living in south west Essex and beyond.

Our vision is to be an excellent provider of high quality, safe, care for our local community. We are constantly working to ensure that our patients receive the very best care the NHS has to offer, and many of our medical and surgical acute services have developed a reputation for excellence and innovation in their field. Our dermatology unit serves the whole of south Essex, and our renal unit is the largest in the county.

We also offer specialist tertiary treatment at The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, which boasts some of the most modern treatment facilities in the country and is recognisednationally and internationally for leading developments in cardiac procedures.

The Trust is rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) who describe our services as effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Basildon Hospital was the first in the country to be rated as ‘outstanding’ for maternity care and our ambition is to become ‘outstanding’ in as many services as possible.

We have a thriving research and development department, and we are part of UCL Partners, an academic health and science partnership of over 40 organisations who form one of the world’s leading centres of medical innovation and education to bring about improvements in healthcare.

Essex - a great place to live

Essex - A great place to live

Situated in the south east of England, Essex is ideally placed with excellent transport links into London and beyond via major road and rail networks, and with two airports at Stansted and Southend. The county has something for everybody - whether you like to live in a town centre close to all amenities or prefer the quiet of living in the countryside.

Based in south Essex, our Trust primarily serves the major towns of Basildon, Thurrock and Brentwood, while being just a short distance away from open countryside, the coast and with easy access into London.

Whether you enjoy the hustle and bustle of large towns, the tranquility of small villages or the outdoor life and being by the sea, the area offers a wealth of living and leisure environments.

Housing and education

Housing and education

Recent investment in housing and leisure facilities means that south Essex remains a popular place to live for young people and families. Modern developments provide a mixture of homes to suit all budgets; from affordable studio apartments and small houses to larger family homes.

You don’t have to travel far out of town to find comfortable suburban homes and a little further afield there are small village communities throughout Essex offering the slower pace of the countryside with the convenience of good road and rail links.

South Essex has a number of highly regarded primary and secondary schools providing children with a solid educational foundation, and the county boasts some of the highest performing selective state secondary schools in England. There are a number of sixth form and further education colleges across the area offering academic and vocational courses for young adults who wish to continue with their studies.

Leisure

Leisure

However you like to spend your leisure time, during the day and at night, there is something for everyone in south Essex.

If you like the outdoors, you may be surprised to find that south Essex has a number of large country parks providing hundreds of acres of open space to enjoy, so you are always only minutes away from a taste of the countryside. If you do like to be beside the seaside, then Southend with its seven miles of seafront, pier and Adventure Island amusement park, is just a few miles away.

The excellent sporting facilities locally include the recently built Basildon Sporting Village which boasts two swimming pools, a regional gymnastics centre, large gym, indoor climbing wall, an athletics stadium and outdoor pitches. There are also a number of smaller sports centres and swimming pools throughout the area, and Basildon has a large ten-pin bowling alley.

If you prefer to spend your leisure time shopping, the Lakeside, Bluewater and Westfield Stratford shopping centres and retail parks are each just a short journey away by road or rail, while it is easy to travel into London which is just 30 minutes away by train.

All of the local towns come alive at night with numerous restaurants and bars, or for a more relaxing evening you could choose to eat and drink in one of the many traditional country pubs. For family entertainment there are a number of cinemas and theatres across south Essex, offering a variety of shows for all ages.

If you are keen to explore the rest of Essex, you will find a wealth of places to go and things to do throughout the county. Essex is rich in history, with some of the oldest recorded and best preserved historical remains in the country. These include the ancient town walls and castle remains in the old Roman capital of Colchester, and the magnificent Norman keep at Hedingham Castle.
